Waterbeing – our first self initiated studio production – is an eight minute animated film told simply through music and moving image. It focuses on the story of a young woman learning to survive in a world where everyone wants her to move in the same direction. In a world that feels sink-or-swim, will she manage to float?

Early sketches and character development of the older character in the Waterbeing animated short.

The self initiated project was conceived as a way to further explore storytelling, without having to answer a commercial brief. This has given us the opportunity to create a more meditative, quieter piece of work. Based on personal experiences, Waterbeing looks to highlight the feeling of needing to perform or to race to the finish line. Only then finding that you’re not entirely happy when you get there.

Waterbeing embroidered swimming badges referencing the ones you received at school. These were gifted as part of the Kickstarter Crowdfunding campaign.

We ran a successful Kickstarter campaign throughout the Autumn of 2022 to help complete the production of the project. As rewards for backers, we created unique film posters, giclee prints and even bespoke swimming badges that were tailored to each backers level.

The film is currently screening at a number of UK and international festivals and will be available to view online in 2024. Studio Kiln intends to make space for more non-commercial work every year as we believe it gives us the opportunity to learn new software, work in different mediums and tell new stories.

Our Approach

We approach both personal and commercial projects with ambition, rigour and an acceptance that we don’t know what the end result will be. With each unique collaboration comes a unique solution that is only unearthed by bringing the right people, technologies and processes together.

This results in an output that excites us – a portfolio where each project is different from the last and a library of creative solutions that are intrinsically tied to the team and problem we all attempted to solve.
